Whether it’s traveling the world in private jets, dancing with the Queen, or even meeting some of the most incredible and recognizable people, what’s it really like to work for the family? the most famous in the world? Working for the Queen in places like Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and other royal residences really has to be a pinch moment.
There are very few people who can tell what the job is really like given how difficult it can be to get a position. But for those lucky enough, here’s what you need to know.
There are currently seven vacancies within the Royal Household which span various official residences including Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.

Whether you’re applying to become a private secretary, squire, cleaner, or chef, there’s likely a role for everyone with every skill set.
According to Royal family website, there is a lengthy application process that accompanies every job, as well as rigorous security checks.
The website states: “To apply for a vacancy you will either be a UK citizen or you will have already obtained the legal right to work in the UK. Everyone who works for the royal household has security clearance. If successful, you will therefore go through our security verification process.
In an interview with Town and country magazine a former member of royal staff explained what working for the family entails and why it is such a good job.
Grant Harrold, a former butler to the Prince of Wales, said: ‘I remember being nervous when I met the Prince of Wales, and he was able to calm us down as we had afternoon tea and just talking to each other. I must have done something right that day because I was in a position very soon after.”
Of the seven full-time positions currently available, The Queen is looking to hire a housekeeping assistant at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, an auditor and chef at Buckingham Palace, and a facilities coordinator at Windsor Castle.
If you’ve successfully applied to become the Queen’s housekeeper in her Scottish household, you can expect to receive £9.90 an hour plus a 15% employer’s contribution pension scheme.
The job description reads: “Previous experience in housekeeping or hospitality would be an advantage but is not essential. We are more interested in your proactive approach and ability to take on new challenges.”
A different role currently up for grabs is that of EA’s Master of the House at Buckingham Palace. For this role, you can expect a salary of £38,000 to £40,000 (depending on experience).
The website reads: “As an EA, you will provide expert support to the Master, showing initiative to prioritize and manage multiple requests on their behalf, and helping them balance strategic and operational priorities. , with a strong drive to continuously improve operations. Joining a highly professional and dedicated team, you will be expected to uphold the highest standards in a unique and fast-paced environment.”
He continues: “You will act as an ambassador for the Master and its department and will be exposed at a higher level throughout the organization. Externally, you will build professional relationships with government officials, diplomatic offices, guests private individuals and the senior management of both public and private companies.
“Beyond that, you will be a primary point of communication, distributing key information between department teams, tailoring speeches and presentations to various audiences, and contributing to departmental communications to the wider organization. You will also plan and organize key meetings, including preparing agendas, reports and minutes, as well as managing travel and diary.
Another exciting opportunity at Buckingham Palace is that the new Chef de partie. This role offers a competitive salary with a Pension plan with 15% employer contribution and residential accommodation.
The description reads: “As you would expect, the standards are exceptionally high here, and every day is busy, so you will need to be an ambitious and skilled chef. You may have previous experience in a top-notch kitchen or in an environment volume catering. , but it is your ability, your enthusiasm, your motivation to develop your skills and your attitude that we are looking for.
“You are at your best at working in a team, and with your good communication skills and adaptability, you will enjoy working alongside your colleagues. Attention to detail is also essential, as is your ability to respect deadlines and to ensure that food is cooked and presented beautifully.Most importantly, you have a clear passion for food and the catering industry, and will be keen to learn new skills.
