Nikyatu Jusu directs vampire movie for Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions

First feature from writer/director Nikyatu Jusu Nannythe first horror film to win the American Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the Sundance Film Festival, will hit theaters on November 23rd, then reach Amazon Prime Video on December 16e. With her film about it making its way around the world, Jusu is now focused on her next projects – and we know she has at least two more horror films in development. Last month, it was announced that Jusu would direct a sequel to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic. night of the living dead (a sequel produced by Romero’s ex-wife, Christine Romero), and now Deadline has confirmed that Jusu is working on a vampire movie for Jordan Peele’s production company, Monkeypaw Productions. This vampire project is an extension of Jusu’s short suicide in the sunwhich premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

As described by Jusu, suicide in the sun was “about black vampires who walk by day and are protected from the sun by their melanin”. Deadline gave a bit more information, saying the short is set “in the near future in New York City, and tells the story of Valentina (Natalie Paul), who struggles to suppress her bloodlust when a new woman is introduced to him separated twin daughters.Jusu writes the feature expansion with Fredrica Bailey.

At Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards season event, Jusu also took a moment to chat about herself. night of the living dead followed, saying, “The original made social commentary on racism and classism and all the -isms, and the best zombie movies make commentary on humanity. Anna Diop (Titans) stars as Aisha and is joined in the cast by Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Sinqua Walls (American soul), Morgan Spector (Mist television series), Rose Decker (Easttown Mare), and Leslie Uggams (dead Pool).
