Broome County loses emergency after-hours veterinary services

Dog and cat owners in the Binghamton area now face a long drive if their pet needs emergency care at night, on weekends or on holidays.

Vestal Veterinary Hospital, which offered after-hours services, changed its long-standing policy.

The Vestal Parkway facility is now providing emergency care on a reduced schedule. According to its website, the change went into effect on November 21.

In the past, Broome and Tioga County vets referred pet owners to the Vestal office for emergency treatment on weekends or holidays.

The statement from the Vestal Veterinary Hospital said the reduced hours for emergency care services will be in effect “until further notice due to staff shortages and a demanding workload.”

After-hours care can now be more than 50 miles away at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Pet Hospital in Ithaca.

Some pet owners in the Binghamton area may choose to visit the Clarks Summit Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center. This office has reduced its emergency hours in recent months due to staff limitations.
