PORTLAND — Billie June “Judy” Mawhir, 90, of Portland, NY, awoke to the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 28, 2022, after a long illness.

Judy was born September 20, 1931 in Dyersburg TN, the daughter of the late John and Blanche Matilda Hensley. After the untimely death of her parents, she was raised by her sister, the late Lorene (Roy) Crouch.

On March 3, 1951, after a six-week courtship, she married Roderick Leroy Mawhir of Brocton, NY, who had awaited her arrival in paradise since January 5, 2014. They met in Memphis, TN while Rod was stationed there, serving in the US Navy. She returned home with him to western New York where she was warmly welcomed by her family, especially her sisters-in-law, the late Fredora Manzella and the late Vivian Burnside.

Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, daughter Jane Mawhir Wright and daughter-in-law Sylvia Corbett Mawhir.

A homemaker throughout her adult years, her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her life. Countless family meals and celebrations have been enjoyed at the family home in Brocton.

Judy enjoyed helping out at the City of Portland Tax Office for many tax seasons. She was also the accountant for Rod’s contracting business and several rental properties.

She was a member of Brocton Baptist Church and participated in many ministry opportunities there, including Sunday School teacher and various prayer and volunteer groups. She was particularly active in the King’s Daughters, a missionary aid group, in which she made many quilts and other comfort items to donate to various charities. However, his favorite ministry was personal discipleship and Bible study. She enjoyed being a friend and mentor to those seeking guidance or who were new to the Christian faith.

She enjoyed sewing and quilting and spent many hours with her beloved Thursday sewing group. Over the years, her family members received handmade quilts and other items. She looked forward to biannual quilting retreats at Bethany Camp, where over the course of 25 years she has made many friendships and created lasting memories. She also loved to read and greatly appreciated the staff at the Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton for their help in finding all the right books and videos. On Thursday evenings, she often enjoyed music and had fun at Brocton Park.

For the past 18 months she has resided at her daughter’s home in Port-land and has been lovingly cared for by family and friends. The family is especially grateful to Will Care’s John Snyder, his kind-hearted aides Debi and Carla, his sweet companion Darlene, Drs. Don Brautigam and Tim Gorman of Westfield Family Physicians, and the team at Chautauqua County Palliative Care and Hospice who have met so much need over the past few months.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Steve Mawhir (Mairi Drummund), Stan (Linda) Mawhir, Peggy (Charles) Mangus, Patty (Todd) Matteson and son-in-law Phil (Kathie) Wright. She was a lover “Nanny” to Erica (Mike) Sioda, Amy (Joe) Artl, Mike Mangus, Megan (Jared) Wood, Benjamin (Dannie) Matteson, Melissa (Jonathan) Miano, Kyle (Alexis) Wright, Kara (John Peterson) Mawhir, Jody (Seth) ) Merle, Katie (Alex Larson) Mawhir, Travis Mawhir and Sarah Mangus. Her great-grandchildren, Thomas, Amber and Leah Sioda, Abby, Anthony and Ava Artl, Olivia and Piper Hochstatter, Joslyn Ochoa, Will and Elliott Matteson, Izzy and Lennon Miano, Ellie Wright, also brought her so much joy.
